With several celebrities in the spotlight for upcoming marriages and impending divorces, much focus is being placed on prenuptial agreements. For those with a large amount of wealth, a prenup can mean the difference between keeping most of one’s belongings and losing up to half, which could cut a person’s financial worth down immensely. The division of property is where this devaluation of an individual can occur, but with a solid prenuptial agreement, assets may be safeguarded from being split.
As many people in Connecticut may have read, singer Jessica Simpson is the most recent celebrity to make headlines over an alleged prenup dispute. According to reports, she and fiancé Eric Johnson, of NFL fame, are clashing over a prenuptial agreement they recently drew up.
Apparently Johnson has backed out of a promise to sign the prenup, saying essentially that signing an agreement would go against the notion that the two are truly in love.
Whether or not these reports are true remains to be seen. However, the story does highlight the issues that that many have with prenuptial agreements. Going through the process of telling a loved one that a plan should be put into place in case of divorce is not always easy, and sometimes one party does not understand the need for a prenup. No one wants to lose their belongings to someone that they have fallen out of love with or that has fallen out of love with them. At the same time, desiring a prenup may suggest a lack of trust. People who are considering a prenuptial agreement may find it helpful to speak with an experience professional who can clearly explain the reasoning behind the contract.
